You Don’t Have To Do Better

2 minute read

Hopefully you’re reading this and are off to a solid 2019. Let me tell you how my Monday started, true story…

For whatever reason in my mind, I thought school started back for my kids tomorrow, Jan. 8, so we all slept in this morning… until I heard the girls’ school bus drive past our house at 8:25am. After a mad scramble they made it to the school, but geez talk about epic #momfail 🤦‍♀️

I’m sending this email to you, because I HAD to tell you about something I heard yesterday. My husband Jason preached a sermon called, “You don’t have to do better” all about how society and culture tell us we need to be a better parent, a better spouse, have a better body, have a better sex life, and a million other crazy pressures. We’re all on this endless journey to get more done, in an attempt to get more done, especially at the beginning of a new year. The problem is we’re never “off.”

He shared this stat… moms in the workplace spend as much time taking care of their families as stay at home moms in 1975. There’s actually a name for it, it’s called “second shift,” the responsibility and pressure to work after you get home from work.

As I sat there and listened, I was absolutely gut-punched. I know as a wife and mom, I constantly feel like I am failing, like I should be doing more or getting more done, but I was reminded of Matthew 11:28-30

“Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.””

That was Jason’s point yesterday. You don’t have to improve to gain God’s approval. Jesus is the only one who can give you rest for your soul, and He isn’t waiting for you to earn it. He loves the version of you that forgets your kids have school as much as the version that has it all together.

I thought you might want to listen to the sermon, it was seriously AMAZING!!!
