Take the Time
When you consider what it is that we (Christians) claim to be doing when we say we have a “relationship with God,” I’m not sure we appreciate just how crazy that sounds. We’re claiming to interact with a divine being.
Why Is It So Hard To Be Glad?
For so long, I waited for this magical day when I would wake up and be glad. When my church grew to a certain size, I made a hole-in-one, sold a certain number of books, or my kid won a championship. But it always fell short because of the condemning voices of shame.
My Favorite Books of 2023

You’re Not That Little Kid Anymore
Nothing magnifies your insecurity or reopens old wounds like being around family.
Why Strength is Overrated and Admiration Never Feels as Good as You Think It Will
Striving for admiration will keep people far enough away to impress them, but you will always have this nagging accusation in the back of your mind that they only like you because they don’t really know you.
The best thing you can do is breathe
When you begin to contemplate all the ways that trauma and shame hijack your intentions, you can see it everywhere. So what should you you do?
Pray with more imagination
The challenge for many modern Christians, like me, is we are too literal and the Psalms, by and large, are filled with poetic metaphors. In a world saturated with self help books that give you 3 principles and 10 steps, our prayer life lacks imagination.
